Brief History
Before World War II the population of Arlington had grown to more than 4,000. A General Motors assembly plant was built in Arlington in 1951. However In 1961 the population of Arlington was estimated at more than 44,000 and 122,200 residents were reported in 1978. Arlington has a council-manager government. In 1990 the city had two institutions of higher learning, the University of Texas at Arlington and Arlington Baptist College. For recreation and also for water needs Lake Arlington was developed in the southwest section of the city during 1957.
