An exhibition of photographs and videos by the collaborative artistic team of Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler, their first major survey in an American museum. This exhibition reveals how, by presenting picturesque, often brilliantly saturated imagery in vaguely narrative loops, Hubbard and Birchler create videos that operate in an ethereal zone between realism and reverie.
- Tutankhamum and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs Dallas
-
Wednesday, 10/08/2008 thru Sunday, 05/17/2009
Where: Dallas Museum of Art Phone: (214) 922-1200 The Dallas engagement of this exhibit provides insight into the life of Tutankhamun and other royals of the 18th Dynasty (1555–1305 B.C.). Tutankhamun was one of the last kings of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty and ruled during a crucial, turmoil-filled period of Egyptian history. All of the treasures in the exhibition are between 3,300 and 3,500 years old and this exhibit marks the first time these artifacts will be seen in the Southwest region. The current exhibition includes an extensive array of more than 130 extraordinary artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun and other ancient Egyptian sites. The return of the exhibition to the United States will include a selection of artifacts that are new to the exhibit and have never before been seen outside of Egypt.

- Reconstructing the Renaissance: Five Paintings from an Altarpiece by Fra Angelico Fort Worth
-
Tuesday, 11/25/2008 thru Sunday, 02/15/2009
Where: Kimbell Art Museum Phone: (817) 332-8451 In this focus exhibition, shown only at the Kimbell, the Museum reunites its great Fra Angelico painting with the ensemble to which it originally belonged. The other four paintings in the group are on loan from prestigious collections in New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Florence. The panels constituted a predella, which stood at the base of a now-dismembered altarpiece. They illustrate stories from the lives of Saints James, John the Baptist, Dominic and Francis, and Lucy, with a central panel showing the death of the Virgin Mary. Such a predella would have come from an altarpiece incorporating a central Virgin and Child and images of the saints or holy figures, although the other parts of this altarpiece have yet to be conclusively identified. The occasion for the exhibition is the Kimbell’s publication this fall of Laurence Kanter’s book Reconstructing the Renaissance: Saint James Freeing Hermogenes by Fra Angelico. Kanter brought the five altarpiece panels together for the first time in living memory in a Fra Angelico exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2005. Reconstructing the Renaissance is the second volume in the Kimbell Masterpiece Series.
- A Nativity from Naples: Presepe Sculpture of the Eighteenth Century Fort Worth
-
Tuesday, 11/25/2008 thru Sunday, 01/25/2009
Where: Kimbell Art Museum Phone: (817) 332-8451 This holiday season, the Kimbell plays host to an extraordinary loan from Naples, Italy: a magnificent, 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity scene—known in Italian as a presepe after the Latin word for “manger,” praesepe. The Kimbell presepe will feature over 70 figures and animals (ranging up to about 15 inches tall) and will be displayed in the traditional manner with a realistic, rocky setting, complete with crumbling Roman arch. The tradition of presepi took exceptionally strong root in Naples during the 18th century. This was a period of great political stability and economic boom, and the wealthiest Neapolitans commissioned elaborate presepe for display in their palaces at Christmas. The presepe that will be assembled at the Kimbell will include figures by all the greatest sculptors who were active in Naples during the 18th century including Giuseppe Sanmartino and Francesco Gallo. The figures are constructed of the wooden or metal armatures and modeled in clay with miniature glass eyes. The Kimbell will bring the leading expert on presepi and presepe installation, Elio Catello, to arrange the figures in the traditional 18th-century style. Catello’s family has been collecting and installing presepi since the early 19th century.
